Setting a budget and reading the odds honestly

Prize competitions are entertainment, not a plan for making money. This page covers the practical side of that: how to set a budget you’re actually comfortable with, what the numbers on this site do and don’t tell you, and where to go if entering starts to feel like something you can’t put down.

Decide your budget before you look at the board

A budget works best as a decision you make before opening a ranking, not one you arrive at after seeing a draw that looks like good value. Two things worth settling in advance:

Prize Scout lets you compare £5, £10, £20 or £50 side by side across every live draw. That’s for comparing value at a budget you’ve already chosen — not a suggestion that a bigger budget is the better answer.

A high CompSignal score is a comparison, not a forecast

CompSignal ranks live draws against each other for a given budget. It doesn’t rank a draw against the outcome of not entering at all. A draw scoring in the 90s is doing better than most of what’s currently live for that spend — it isn’t telling you that entering it is likely to pay off. See how CompSignal works for exactly what does, and doesn’t yet, feed into that number.

Reading “1 in N” honestly

Every competition states its odds as “1 in N” rather than a percentage, because that’s usually closer to how it actually plays out: across everyone entering, roughly one in N wins, spread evenly rather than weighted toward any one entrant — including you. A better-ranked draw can mean a smaller N than a worse-ranked one at the same budget, but a smaller N is still ordinarily a very large number. Spending more buys more entries into the same pool; it narrows N, it doesn’t turn a low-probability draw into a likely one.

What Prize Scout doesn’t do

Prize Scout doesn’t track what you’ve spent, on one draw or across operators — it isn’t a budgeting tool and it keeps no record of your own entries. It ranks what’s live; what you do with that ranking is yours to decide. If you want a running record of your own spending, that has to live somewhere else. If you’re comparing draws before deciding, best odds by budget ranks every live draw the same way this page describes.

A few honest checks, any time

Prize competitions are entertainment, not an investment. Even a highly ranked draw usually still has a low absolute chance of winning, and this applies to any prize competition, not only the ones ranked highly here. 18+.
